Welcome the sun but never without SPF!

You've probably heard it countless times from your skincare-loving friend or seen it all over your socials. SPF is often recommended as the number one skincare tip because it protects your skin from harmful rays all year round. Many people think sunscreen is only necessary on hot summer days, but did you know that UV radiation already increases significantly in spring?

During winter, UV rays are less intense, but as spring arrives, the amount of UVB radiation rises sharply. This means your skin is more prone to burning, and premature aging lurks around the corner. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can penetrate through the clouds, so wearing SPF daily is an absolute must!

UVA/UVB & what PA++ and SPF mean
What's the difference between UVA and UVB rays?

UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and are responsible for premature aging and wrinkles. They can also indirectly cause DNA damage and increase the risk of skin cancer.

UVB rays are more powerful and cause direct damage to the upper layers of the skin. They play a major role in the development of skin cancer and cause sunburn.

A broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays and is essential for healthy skin. Always check the label!

What do PA++ and SPF mean?

Besides SPF, you’ll often see the label PA followed by plus signs (+). This indicates the level of protection against UVA rays:

  • PA+: Basic UVA protection.
  • PA++: Moderate protection, suitable for daily use.
  • PA+++: High protection, ideal for extended sun exposure.
  • PA++++: Very high protection, perfect for intense sun exposure and sensitive skin.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) indicates how well a sunscreen protects against UVB rays, which are responsible for sunburn and skin damage.

Can you use regular sunscreen on your face?

Yes… you can. But! It’s not always the best choice. Many body sunscreens contain ingredients that may be too heavy or irritating for your facial skin such as thick oils, fragrances, or alcohol. This can lead to clogged pores, irritation, or a sticky feeling.

Can sunscreen replace your day cream?

Sunscreen can absolutely be used as your day cream as long as you choose a hydrating formula that suits your skin type. Many modern facial sunscreens are packed with skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and ceramides, meaning they protect your skin and nourish it at the same time.

So yes, SPF is a year-round essential. Whether you're heading on vacation, sitting on a terrace, or just getting some fresh air. And one last reminder: if you’ve been in the sun for a while, please seek some shade! Ideally indoors, where you’re fully shielded from UV rays. A cap or hat is also a real life-saver when you're swimming or spending long hours in the sun. And if you forget to reapply, at least you've got a backup layer of protection. Want to go fully Korean? UV-protective clothing is a thing too (yes, those cute sleeves!).
